I get quite a few questions about the chart ruler. My article on the chart ruler is a pretty popular one. So, I figured it would be a good idea to make a series out of the chart rulers and what they specifically mean for your life. As I said in the aforementioned article, the chart ruler defines the unfolding of your life story. Your chart ruler is dependent on your Rising sign. There is a somewhat common misconception that the chart ruler is your most dominant planet but that’s not the case. It’s the planet that rules the sign that you have on the Ascendant.
Now, I’m starting off this series with Capricorn Rising. If you have a Capricorn Ascendant, then your chart ruler is Saturn. Personally, I think the house that the chart ruler is in is more important than the sign it’s in because the chart ruler is all about activity and the house is where this activity will take place. The sign matters, of course, but my opinion is that the sign is not as influential as the house that the chart ruler is in.
So, what does it mean to have Saturn as your chart ruler? Well, it’s not a load of fun and giggles. Saturn as your chart ruler sets you up for a life of climbing one mountain after the next. Saturn is about tests, challenges, and difficulties, which is going to give a Capricorn Rising person a particularly difficult life. Having this Ascendant is exhausting because somehow and in some way, we are constantly forced to work hard and overcome obstacles. There really is no room for slacking off.
It’s no wonder why those with a Capricorn Ascendant famously wear that default expression of being serious, tired, melancholy, or over it all. They see life in terms of these obstacles and all of this work we have to do. They’re really not being negative when we feel like everyone else has it easier than us. In more than a few ways, that’s true. Capricorn Rising people are not set up to live an easy life. But, when Saturn’s ruling your chart, life can be seen through a lens that is too pessimistic or too sad and depressing. As much as your life story is defined by challenges, you eventually have to learn that your biggest obstacle is yourself.
Saturn is about self-limitation as much as it’s about the limitations of society and of life. So, when it comes to Saturn, we can all become guilty of self-sabotage, of negative thoughts that become self-fulfilling. Then, we really believe that we’re failures in the area of life that’s represented by our Saturn house. We believe that things suck here and that we suck here. But, a lot of that is just our attitude. Now, while everyone has to deal with this pattern of setting yourself up for failure, it’s really the life story of a Capricorn Rising person. As much as they’re seen as ambitious and mature and successful, they have to plough through failures of their own making to reach this success.
That’ll be represented by the house that Saturn is in. If a Capricorn Rising had Saturn in the 4th, they’d be haunted by being a failure when it came to their family and their personal life. They will spend their lives learning how to re-define their idea of a successful private life, becoming a truly reliable rock for their loved ones. A Capricorn Rising with Saturn in the 7th is living their life by figuring out what it really means to have a solid, functioning relationship. Being single or dumped or rejected can bring out intense fears for them but it’s also the test that will allow them to develop into stronger partners and friends.
So, those with this Rising sign have to go through a life of suffering, in some way, in order to reach these breakthroughs of maturity. Yet, they start out very mature for their age. From childhood, people who have Saturn as their chart ruler stand out as old souls. Your chart ruler is not only your life story but the character you play in that story. With Saturn ruling the chart, you are the kind of protagonist who is very wise and knowing, even at an age when you’re not supposed to be wise and knowing. Capricorn Rising children are invariably adult-like in behavior because their outlook on life teaches them, from the beginning, that there are more serious and important things to think about.
The difficulties in their early lives are very defined by our Saturn house. There is always something in a Capricorn Rising’s background that is upsetting like that, taking away some of the innocence or pleasure of childhood. With Saturn in the 4th, there was the experience of a broken or unhappy home. Saturn in the 11th ruling the chart brought a very painful feeling of being an outcast that robbed the person of an easy childhood.
However, let’s not start playing the violin. After all, a Capricorn Ascendant person does not go around looking for people to feel sorry for them. The fantastic thing about your life story is that you can take all that pain and struggle and sadness you deal with early in your life and totally turn it around. Therefore, as a Capricorn Rising, your life is about becoming a success. It’s just that you realize that success only comes after repeated setbacks and trials and hard work. I’d say that only Scorpio Rising is your equal in being the true “comeback kid.” Saturn ruling the chart can make life suck up until the first Saturn Return. That’s when you're really able to turn the tables.
Having a planet ruling your chart is like constantly going through the Return of that planet. So, Capricorn Rising people, up until the age of about 28 or 29, are enduring a non-stop Saturn Return: overcoming challenges, dealing with issues, assessing and re-assessing failures and successes. After the first Saturn Return, I believe things mellow out and life gets easier for us. But, still, we cannot slack off. If we do, then we will feel the consequences, more than anyone else. Then, when the second Saturn Return comes around, at the age of 58 to 59, the Capricorn Rising person will be so solid and so grounded that they’ll be ready for a happy retirement, in more ways than one. After a lifetime of really hard work, then it’ll finally be time to kick back and relax.
That’s why you’ll find that, as a Capricorn Rising, your Saturn Return most likely won’t be that bad at all. In fact, I think this Rising sign barely even feels it. While everyone else is freaking out during their Saturn Return, Capricorn Rising just thinks, “Welcome to my life, people.” Therefore, the first Saturn Return is a time of newfound confidence and even positivity for Capricorn Ascendants. After years of dealing with constant anxiety, stress, depression, fear, and disappointment, the script flips for us. And the Return of your chart ruler is a time when you can really let the script of your life change. During the Saturn Return, Capricorn Rising people gain a true sense of how strong, capable, mature, and prepared they actually are. Life gives us lemons and we make tasty lemonade. Therefore, when you’re feeling down, don’t despair. The only reason life is bringing you all of these struggles is for you to become stronger and for you to be prepared for that mighty Saturn Return. Then, when you look back, you’ll be grateful for everything that happened, in a wise, salt-of-the-earth kind of way.
